Energy production in the capital would help balance the country’s electricity grid and smooth price fluctuations, according to Olli Sirkka, CEO of Helsinki’s energy firm Helen.
“We have moved on to a new nuclear age where, unfortunately, the role that nuclear weapons play has been increasing,” President Alexander Stubb said on Monday.
Finland has provided close to five billion euros’ worth of support to Kyiv since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. More could be on the way via a scheme launched by US President Donald Trump, Helsingin Sanomat reports on Sunday.
This is the second time that Finland is taking part in the exercise – but the first time it has said so in advance. Its F/A 18 combat aircraft cannot carry nuclear weapons.
“The geopolitical environment at the EU’s external borders with Russia and Belarus is very tense, which is why preparedness is now more important than ever before,” Interior Minister Mari Rantanen (Finns) said.
