In some parts of Finland electricity transmission fees have risen so rapidly that transmission costs sometimes exceed the price of the actual electricity used.

“Electricity consumption is high and we are still exporting – that’s a new thing during a time of peak consumption,” said the CEO of Finnish Energy.

The shutdown comes as much of Finland is facing the coldest temperatures of the winter so far and some 800 households remain without power following a major storm last weekend.
